Background

The symposium theme is Edge computing at the Tactical edge – so leveraging edge computing for survivability and information superiority at the tactical edge. Examples of previous activities that contribute to solving individual parts of this problem space include: IST-150 on NATO Core Services profiling for Hybrid Tactical Networks, IST-147 exploiting Military Applications of Internet of Things and, IST-168 on Adaptive Information Processing and Distribution in Disadvantaged Tactical Networks to Support C2. Current activities that are related include IST-176 on Federated Interoperability of Military C2 and IoT Systems, IST-202 targeting Federated Tactical Networking, and IST-193 on Edge Computing at the Tactical Edge.

Objectives

The objective is to explore the topic of “edge computing” in context of the “tactical edge”, without being constrained to a particular solution or technology. The symposium shall address edge computing, in the sense of distributed computing approaches near where things and people produce or consume information. This is broader than what is often commonly understood by the term, where e.g., IST-193 investigates Kubernetes specifically (a service orchestration solution) and the 5G community would equate “edge computing” with MEC (mobile edge computing). These technologies have their space in the symposium, but it is not limited to either of these. The symposium will be an arena for sharing knowledge and advancing the state of the art. The objective being leveraging edge computing for survivability and information superiority at the tactical edge.

Topics

• Edge computing • Tactical networks • Tactical cloud • Policy routing • Adaptive services • Inter-relationship between Edge Computing, Adaptive Networking, and Information Management • Virtualization and service orchestration • Resource and service discovery • Interoperability and federation • Microservices architecture, fine grained scalability • Parallelization and performance • Digitalization and automation • The tactical edge as an element of wider cloud infrastructure • Edge computing platform and infrastructure support - Mobile nodes - Heterogeneous technologies and capacities - Wireless communications and Policy routing - AI (edge computing to support for AI algorithms on the edge) • Autonomy (for edge devices, can also be C4I components) • Military applications of edge computing - Lessons from real-world exercises and/or operations - Edge computing implications for the future of C2
